HELLO. THIS IS DIGITAL POLITICS. I'm Mark Scott, and this is the penultimate newsletter of the year. The final edition will land on Dec 23 — which, as everyone should know, is Festivus. (It's for the rest of us).

I'm doing something a little different this week. As 2024 nears its end, over two billion people across more than 80 countries have voted in the largest ever demonstration of democracy in the history of the world.

What role did digital play in elections from Pakistan to the European Union to the United States? What lessons can we take in how online campaigning, emerging technologies like generative AI and nascent online safety regulatory regimes handled the complexities of this global election megacycle?

I may not have all the answers. But I've certainly got some ideas.

Let's get started.
